Why Film Producers Don't Get Movie Financing

There are lots of great reasons to keep your film production low budget. Primary among them is the fact that you just aren't going to find funding. There are more movies than funding available. It's not likely you will be the one to lands the millions.

The mere act of getting funding is a different skill than filmmaking and one you might not like. It's easy for me to hammer away at you about not designing the film to need financing, but there are great reasons why you won't get financing even if you wanted it.

Script Changes

People with money always think they know more than you. They will read your script and they will love it, but soon their true feelings will come out. As soon as they mention their interest in financing the picture they will also present a list of changes that need to be made to the script. Most of these changes won't make the movie better, it'll just make it different and maybe worse. If you care about making a remarkable film, you won't let people cajole you into ruining the good parts so you can get money for things you probably don't really need.

Need Stars

These people who want to finance your film are not doing it to help you out. They finance films with the hope of making more money than they invested. It's a gamble, but one that can pay off big if it's done right. These people are not filmmakers, so they will only know a few ways to help make this film better. They know they've heard stars help movies make money, so they will want a star. You don't know any stars, nor do your friends. Even if you did, this star would likely demand changes on par with what the financiers come up with. You don't want to ruin your film just to have a big name in it.

Need Better Crew

Thus far you have likely gathered a group of loyal people that comprise your filmmaking team. You have a director, writer, director of photography, sound person, and maybe more. Once financiers smell money they will want more established craftsmen to work on the project. The director you've been molding this project with may not be seen as a valid candidate by the money folks. They want a name, somebody that has made a movie that made money already. They may also want your crew to have worked on lots of movies already and not just be up and coming people you've nurtured til now.

No Track Record

You're the driving force behind this movie but you haven't made as many as other producers the financiers know. They might bring on another producer to "help" out and next thing you know it is no longer your picture any longer. They may not have the faith that you can negotiate with a studio for a favorable distribution deal, they doubt you can get mainstream media to pay attention to the movie. You are an unknown quantity and for them to give you money they will want to have as much insurance as possible, which may include replacing you.

They Want The Next Big Thing

Financiers want money, but they don't just want a little. They want as much as possible. They are hoping you will not only turn this movie into the next Hollywood hit, but that you will become a Hollywood filmmaker gravy train they can ride for a long while. They are thinking in terms of building a business off of your taste and organizational skills, and they won't want it to be a mom and pop shop. They don't look at film as an artistic outlet where you can get by making films you believe in but not necessarily make tons of money. They see it as a glamorous way to make money and that is the only reason they will lend you theirs.

They Have No Money

As much as I say money people are into making money in a sexy industry, lots of them don't actually have money and just want the glitz. Hucksters abound in the movie industry and you might have one telling you he can make your dreams come true. Often these people use you as entree to meeting others and use the allure of movies to date women or generally get people to envy them. It takes no credentials to be a producer so be aware that anyone can offer you the sky, but they will rarely be able to come through.

The process of film financing is time-consuming. Some movies take years to find the money only to have it fall through at the last minute and have to start over. If this sounds like how you want to spend your time go ahead. If you want to make movies, design them so they don't need financing in the first place.

The Warlords Movie

The Warlords Movie Review

Love, politics, and loyalty threaten to tear apart three soldiers in this lavish historical epic from Hong Kong. In 1870, the power of the corrupt Qing Dynasty has been threatened by the rise of a revolutionary army, led by religious fanatics, and civil war is tearing the nation apart. Pang Qingyun (Jet Li), a good man who finds himself fighting for the Qing leadership, is one of the only survivors of a bloody battle in between revolutionaries and Qing troops, and is looking for someplace to go when he's offered shelter by a beautiful peasant woman, Lian (Xu Jinglei). Pang and Lian spend the night in each others arms, and he finds himself falling in love with her. Pang sets out to make his way home when he's befriended by Zhao Erhu (Andy Lau) and Jiang Wuyang (Takeshi Kaneshiro), a pair of bandits. When Jiang is attacked in an ambush, Pang helps save his life, and the three men become blood brothers in a gory ritual. Pang convinces Jiang and Zhao to join him in the fight against the revolutionaries, and with their help Pang is able to achieve some impressive victories. However, when Pang allows his own ego and dreams of glory to override his common sense and loyalty, Zhao and Jiang come to distrust their ally, and matters become worse when it is revealed that Lian is Zhao's wife. Tou Ming Zhuang (aka The Warlords) was a major box-office success in China and Eastern Asia before making its way to theaters in Europe and the United States.

Set in the midst of war and political upheaval during the Taiping Rebellion of the 1860s, General Pang barely survives a brutal massacre of his fellow soldiers by playing dead, and joins a band of bandits led by Er Hu and Wu Yang. After fighting back attackers from an helpless village, the three men take an oath to become "blood brothers," pledging loyalty to one another until death, but things quickly turn sour and the three men become embroiled in a web of political deceit, and a love triangle between Pang, Er Hu and a beautiful courtesan.

What’s the movie? The Warlords (2007)

What’s it rated? Rated R for epic battle sequences, a lot of spearing and two dozen conversations about honor.

Did people make it? Written by Tin Nam Chun, Junli Guo, Jiping He, Jianxin Huang, Jo Jo Yuet-chun Hui, Oi Wah Lam, Lan Xu and James Yuen. Directed by Peter Chan. Acted by Jet Li, Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Jinglei Xu and Jacky Heung.

What’s it like in one sentence? A Chinese Shakespearean tragedy with epic battles and Jet Li beating some ass.

Why did you watch it? Prunetracy recommended it and PintelGuy seconded. I also really love all three leads, so I figured it couldn’t be all that bad.

What’s it about in one paragraph? During a civil war around the time of the Qing Dynasty, General Pang Qingyun (Li) is the only soldier left alive during a decisive battle. He is nursed back to health by a lovely and mysterious woman named Lian (Xu), who gives him such a night of hot loving and hotter soup, that it brings him back from the brink of death. The next morning she is gone and he hooks up with Jiang (Kaneshiro), a thief who instantly takes a liking to him once he figures out that Jet Li can beat him like a disobedient rug. Jiang takes Pang back to his village (comprised of mostly other thieves) and introduces him to Er-Hu (Lau), the leader of their community. Pang, Er-Hu and Jiang all become instant blood brothers and decide to build their own army for honor and peace and also more honor. The only problem is Er-Hu’s special lady friend is Lian, the same woman that nursed Pang back to health during their Night of Soup and Asian Lovemaking. Will Pang’s honor prevent him from going after the woman he loves? Will Er-Hu’s honor allow him to let Liahttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifn be with the man she had a soupy night with? Will Lian’s honor keep her from making a decision for the film’s entire running time? Will all Chinese movies always be about honor and people’s attempts to honor each other and themselves?
